Are you ready to kickstart your fitness journey for 2025?
You might be thinking of joining a gym and sweating off your favourite treats to make 2025 your year.
But let’s be honest—you’ve probably tried this before.
It works for three or four weeks before you jump back on life's hamster wheel.
Training stops, and soon enough, you’re back enjoying all those sweet delights you love so much swearing to restart again on Monday, then the next monday, then next month etc.
So this year, let’s shift the focus and try a new approach.
Why Training for Weight Loss Isn’t the Answer
Training alone isn’t effective for weight loss. Why? Because it’s much easier to consume calories than it is to burn them.
Here’s a simple example:
1 pound of fat is roughly 3,500 calories, meaning you’d need a 3,500-calorie deficit to burn it off.
A typical 60-minute gym session burns around 400 calories.
Compare that to a latte and a sweet treat from Costa—400–600 calories consumed in just 10 minutes!
Relying on training to “burn it off” won’t work if you’re over-consuming calories.
But when life gets difficult don’t ditch training altogether, because while it’s not the best tool for weight loss, the list of other benefits is incredible.
The Benefits of Training Beyond Weight Loss
Build Muscle, Build Strength
Think of muscle as a vital organ—not for bodybuilding, but for strength and performance. Building lean muscle improves tendon and ligament strength, reduces aches and pains, and contains mitochondria (“the powerhouse of the cell”) that boost energy and overall performance.
Boost Cardiovascular Health
Training strengthens your heart, lowers blood pressure, and reduces cholesterol levels. It also minimises the risk of cardiovascular disease. Plus, having a stronger heart gives you a better reserve to fight illness if needed.
Support Weight Management
While not ideal for weight loss alone, training helps maintain your weight, improves body composition, and reduces body fat percentage.
Enhance Mobility and Flexibility
Improve your range of motion and reduce your risk of injury, keeping you moving well for years to come.
Strengthen Your Bones
Increase bone density and reduce the risk of osteoporosis, key for staying strong as you age and especially important for women.
Reduce Pain
Alleviate chronic issues like back or joint pain by strengthening the supporting muscles and improving overall mobility.
Relieve Stress and Boost Mental Health
Training releases endorphins, your body’s natural stress relievers. It can also improve daily mental clarity and help you perform better in your career and at home with your family.
Build Confidence
Accomplishing fitness goals—especially things you once thought impossible—can skyrocket your self-esteem.
Increase Focus
Enhance cognitive function and concentration to perform better in all aspects of life, including your career.
Improve Sleep
Training promotes deeper, higher-quality sleep, which is crucial for recovery and overall well-being.
Gain More Energy
Boost your physical and mental energy, so you’re ready to take on whatever life throws your way.
Be More Productive
Training sharpens your efficiency and ability to tackle daily tasks.
Foster Social Connections
Training with a group builds community and support. Something we’re passionate about at JW Fitness. Come see what our amazing community feels like!
Extend and Improve Life
Active lifestyles are linked to a longer life expectancy, but it’s not just about living longer, it’s about living better for longer.
Maintain Independence as You Age
Staying strong and mobile keeps you capable of handling everyday tasks as you grow older.
